Winter participation by neotropical migrant and resident birds in mixed-species flocks in northeastern Mexico
Article Abstract:
A study of the species composition and social organization of mixed-species flocks in the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve was made to determine the winter participation of migrant and resident birds. Findings showed that 37% of all species in the area participated in mixed-species flocks, including 16 migrant species. More migrant than resident species were noted in flocks in the tropical semi-deciduous and dry pine-oak forests. It was likewise shown that habitat, resource availability, species density, or the presence of other species in the mixed-species flock dictate the social role of a species within it.

Molecular vs. phenotypic sexing in Red Knots
Article Abstract:
It is possible to conveniently and accurately sex Red Knots using agarose gel electrophoresis of digested products of the DNA-binding region in the chromo-helicase-DNA-binding protein genes. It has been clearly established that Red Knots cannot be sexed accurately with commonly used mensural or plumage characters. The ability to accurately determine sex of birds with molecular sexing methods makes it possible to analyze sex ratios in different age classes and obtain information about many other sex-related life history parameters.
