Nuclear export of the small ribosomal subunit requires the Ran-GTPase cycle and certain nucleoporins
Article Abstract:
The Ran-GTPase cycle and certain nucleoporins necessary for export from the nucleus of the small ribosomal subunit are discussed. Information is based on a study using the cytoplasmic localization of the 5' ITS1 fragment as indicator for the export of the small ribosomal subunit to identify necessary genes. Mutations in Ran or its regulators cause 5' ITS1 to accumulate in the nucleoplasm. Accumulation of 5' ITS1 in the nucleus was not found in 28 yeast strains with mutations in other genes that affect traffic in the nucleus.

DNA end-independent activation of DNA-PK mediated via association with the DNA-binding protein C1D
Article Abstract:
DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) is involved in V(D)J recombination and DNA double-strand break repair. It is made up of a DNA-targeting component, Ku, and a catalytic subunit, DNA-PK sub CS. C1D can interact with DNA-PK in cells of mammals. C1D is a very good in vitro DNA-PK substrate. A function for C1D is now known and novel mechanisms for DNA-PK in vivo activation can be hypothesized.
