Oil field souring control by nitrate-reducing Sulfurospirillum spp. that outcompete sulfate-reducing bacteria for organic electron donors
Article Abstract:
The properties of the main nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) present in a bioreactor and the lower limit of the sulfate concentration at which effective sulfur cycling can still occur are determined. The analysis of cocultures of Desulfovibrio sp. strain Lac3, Lac6 or Lac15 and Sulfurospirillum sp. strain KW has shown its heterotrophic NRB (hNRB) activity and ability to produce inhibitory concentrations of nitrite to be key factors for controlling oil field sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB).

Respiration and growth of Shewanella decolorationis S12 with an Azo compound as the sole electron acceptor
Article Abstract:
The energy required for growth in Shewanella decolorationis is obtained from coupled oxidation and azoreduction of amaranth, an azocompound in the culture medium. The inhibitors of azoreduction activity affect the actions of dehydrogenase, cytochromes and menaquinone showing the linkage of azoreduction with electron transport chain and hence respiration.
