PCR differentiation of commercial yeast strains using intron splice site primers
Article Abstract:
A technique based on polymerase chain reaction using oligonucleotide primers, that are complementary to intron splice sites, has been developed for the quick and easy identification of yeast strains. The method targets introns to determine the presence of polymorphisms in commercial yeast strains. The technique removes the need for DNA isolation. This makes the method affordable for small industrial laboratories with limited resources. The method allows many samples to be analyzed in a single day, and is suitable for monitoring yeast growth during fermentation.

Cell-specific respiratory activity of aquatic bacteria studied with the tetrazolium reduction method, Cyto-Clear slides, and image analysis
Article Abstract:
The cell dimensions and formazan crystals of a single 4',6'-diamino-2-phenylindole-stained bacteria from a natural bacterioplankton community were analyzed by a novel image analysis system. The method also involves the measurement of cell size and respiratory activity by a planktonic bacteria in Cyto-Clear slides based on total formazan volume. The novel image analysis system indicated the presence of extremely variable cell-specific activity that is not affected by cell size.
