Virioplankton: viruses in aquatic ecosystems
Article Abstract:
Aquatic viruses can have a substantial impact on aquatic microbial populations. These viruses consist mostly of bacteriophages and algal viruses and may be even more abundant in aquatic environments than bacteria.

Effects of sunlight on bacteriophage viability and structure
Article Abstract:
Strong sunlight influences the viability of bacteriophages in surface waters, resulting in higher estimates of the number of bacteria that can infect and replicate when counts of virus-like particles are used. In deeper waters, direct counts give better estimates of viable bacteriophages as the effect of sunlight is negligible. Two marine bacteria that are affected differently by sunlight have the same rates of destruction of viral capsid structure. The destruction of the capsid structure appears to be similar in different taxa though viability is different.

Population dynamics of Chesapeake Bay virioplankton: total-community analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis
Article Abstract:
Pulse-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) fingerprinting is used in studying the population dynamics of virioplankton communities found in Chesapeake Bay. Principal-component and cluster analyses of viral PFGE fingerprints show changes in the virioplankton community is associated with time, geographical location and water column stratification. This finding suggests clonal diversity of bacterio- and phytoplankton host communities is an important element of the virus community.
