Proline biosynthesis from L-ornithine in Clostridium sticklandii: purification of delta(super 1)-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase, and sequence and expression of the encoding gene, proC
Article Abstract:
The Gram-positive anaerobe Clostridium sticklandii has the ability to synthesize the electron acceptor proline from ornithine by action of ornithine aminotransferase and delta(super 1)-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (PCA) reductase. This is evident in an experiment in which PCA reductase was purified to homogeneity in a three-step procedure involving affinity chromatography with Procion Red, ammonium sulfate precipitation and gel filtration on Sephadex GF200. The proC gene encoding PCA reductase of Clostridium sticklandii was cloned, sequenced and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli.

Rhizobium leguminosarum contains a group of genes that appear to code for methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins
Article Abstract:
The existence of potential methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein (MCP)-encoding genes in Rhizobium leguminosarum were determined using oligonucleotide primers. In this study, five putative MCP-encoding genes were isolated and identified. Results confirmed the existence of MCP-like genes in the bacteria. Some of these genes were found to play a role in the early stages of plant-microbe interaction.
