RTG1 and RTG2: Two yeast genes required for a novel path of communication from mitochondria to the nucleus
Article Abstract:
The yeast CIT2 gene, which codes for a peroxisomal isoform of citrate synthase, is an example of a gene whose expression is influenced by mitochondrial activity. Characterization of the upstream sequence of CIT2 revealed the presence of two genes, RTG1 and RTG2, which are required for retrograde expression. RTG1 codes for a protein with a basic helix-loop-helix motif, while RTG2 encodes a protein of unknown function. Although both genes are not required for cell viability, both are required for the maintenace of a functional metabolic interaction between the TCA and the glyoxylate cycles.

Yeast TAF(sub II)145 required for transcription of G1/S cyclin genes and regulated by the cellular growth state
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to demonstrate the dependence of the transcription of G1 and certain B-type cyclin genes on yTAF(sub II)145, yeast TAF(subII) complex's core subunit. Yeast cells were found to stop dividing, experience a G0-like state and end transcription of most genes after nutrient deprivation or during high cell density. Results also show that some TFIID components, including yTAF(sub II)145, have a special function in the control of growth and transcription during cell cycle progression.

The DExH box protein Suv3p is a component of a yeast mitochondrial 3'-to-5' exoribonuclease that suppresses group I intron toxicity
Article Abstract:
A study of the mitochondrial protein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that the mitochondrial protein Suv3p functions to remove group I intron toxicity. The Suv3p is an NTP-dependent RNA helicase that, from the study, showed its ability to degrade group I introns in vitro. The activity of the Suv3p is that of an exoribonuclease specific for RNA that proceeds in the direction 3'-to-5'.
