Muscularity in adult humans: proportion of adipose tissue-free body mass as skeletal muscle
Article Abstract:
The ratio of skeletal muscle to adipose tissue-free body mass (SM/ATFM) was examined in a large cohort of healthy adults, including 139 men and 165 women. The effect of disease on the SM/ATFM ratio was also explored with a group of AIDS patients.

Relative and interacting effects of sex, race, and environment upon body cell mass in healthy adults
Article Abstract:
Factors that influence body cell mass (BCM) usually are not considered in epidemiology studies in nutrition, which usually emphasize body fat/obesity. Relative influence of race, sex, age, and environment on BCM have been compared. Results of bioimpedance analyses in two cohorts of healthy adults were used. The groups included African-American and Caucasians in the US and natives of Zaire. Sex was found to affect normal body composition to a greater extent than does race or environment.

History of the study of human body composition: a brief review
Article Abstract:
The study of human body composition is a branch of human biology that focuses on the quantification of body components, the relationships between them, and their quantitative changes related to influencing factors. Ancient study of the body was not based on experiments. The Arab Avicenna provided knowledge of organ size in the 11th century. Considerable body composition data is accumulated through cadaver dissection.
