Reversible expression of motility and flagella in Clostridium chauvoei and their relationship to virulence
Article Abstract:
A study of nine variants of Clostridium chauvoei strain Okinawa reveals three of them to be non-motile while six are aflagellate. Their frequency of occurrence is very high and vary from the parental strains only in flagellation and motility. All the variants express flagella and motility in a reversible fashion, indicating that the wild-type strain has the inherent potential for the reversible expression of flagella and motility in each variant. Virulence of the non-motile flagellate variants is higher than that of the non-motile aflagellate variants.

Acetate acts as a protonophore and differentially affects bead movement and cell migration of the gliding bacterium Cytophaga johnsonae (Flavobacterium johnsoniae)
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the role of acetate in the bead movement and cell migration of the gliding bacterium Cytophaga johnsonae. The findings indicate that acetate, in nutrient-level quantity, inhibits bead movement on cell surfaces but does not affect cell formation or movement. Moreover, it appears that the level of cellular ATP affects bead movement more than by the protonmotive force.

Frozen motion of gliding bacteria outlines inherent features of the motility apparatus
Article Abstract:
The mode of action of the motility apparatus of Myxococcus xanthus resembles a twisted circularly closed 'band'. Data show that during gliding, groups of nodes of the twisted apparatus travel in a wave fashion along the trichomes.
