Role of LPS length in clearance rate of bacteria from the bloodstream in mice
Article Abstract:
The Pseudomonas aeruginosa TUM3 HSR mutant strain, which overexpresses the long O-polysaccharide side chain of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is insensitive to murine serum, does not spread from the liver to other parts of the body and is not cleared from rat blood as fast as the TUM3 strain. The LPS deficient strain of Salmonella typhimurium is cleared from the blood faster than the wild-type strain but both strains are insensitive to murine serum. Thus the side chain makes the bacteria resist phagocytosis by the reticuloendothelial system.

A chromosomal ars operon homologue of Pseudomonas aeruginosa confers increased resistance to arsenic and antimony in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
Operons encoding homologous arsenic-resistance determinants (ars) have been found in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial plasmids. A Pseudomonas aeruginosa chromosomal ars operon homologue has been identified through cloning and complementation of an E. coli ars mutant, containing three potential ORFs. Operon expression was induced by arsenite at the mRNA level, and DNA sequences homlogous with the operon were detected in some Pseudomonas species.

Phase variation of lic1A, lic2A and lic3A in colonization of the nasopharynx, bloodstream and cerebrospinal fluid by Haemophilus influenzae type b
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to determine the role of Haemophilus influenzae lic gene phase variation in the infection of infants. The data show that depending on the tissue types the organisms infect, different combinations of lic genes are expressed.
