Sexual development genes of Neurospora crassa
Article Abstract:
An examination of Neurospora crassa's preferentially expressed sexual development (sdv) genes showed that nitrogen starvation was necessary for the synthesis of mutant strains under vegetative growth conditions. Moreover, the A mating type product was found to be essential for the expression of most sdv genes. A number of such genes were isolated through subtractive hybridization and the expression of 14 of these sdv genes in mutant strains under conditions of crossing and vegetative growth was examined.

Insertional mutagenesis in Neurospora crassa: cloning and molecular analysisof the preg+ gene controlling the activity of the transcriptional activator NUC-1
Article Abstract:
Insertional mutation of the NUC-1 negative regulatory gene, preg+, of Neurospora crassa was undertaken as a preliminary step in cloning. Molecular analysis of the gene reveals that the carboxy terminal of the gene product bears strong resemblance to the PHO80 regulatory element in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Further, it was shown that phosphate do not regulate gene transcription. The mutations affected highly conserved residues which are believed to interact with the regulatory region of NUC-1.

Some property of the nucleus determines the competence of Neurospora crassa for transformation
Article Abstract:
Experiments which involve the integration of two different plasmids in one transformation procedure in heterocyclic spheroplasts are performed. The experiments indicated that the formation of spheroplasts in Neurospora require the presence of competent nuclei. The limitations on the plasmal membrane at the test level of the nucleus retards the formation of the Neurospora spheroplasts.
