Statistical quantification of detachment rates and size distributions of cell clumps from wild-type (PAO1) and cell signaling mutant (JP1) Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms
Article Abstract:
Studies done on two strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a wild type (PAO1) and a cell signaling mutant (JP1), to quantify and model detachment patterns and determine the influence of cell signaling on detachment are reported. The PAO1 and JP1 strain biofilms expressed similar growth dynamics, as well as similar detached clump size distributions, indicating that the lasI-lasR cell signaling system has not played a major role in growth, structure or detachment.

Viscoelasticity of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in response to fluid shear allows resistance to detachment and facilitates rolling migration
Article Abstract:
A report that Staphylococcus aureus microcolonies moved downstream by rolling along the lumen walls of a glass flow cell, driven by the flow of the overlying fluid is presented. The results suggest that viscoelasticity allows S. aureus biofilms to resist detachment due to increased fluid shear by deformation, while remaining attachment to a surface.

Growth and detachment of cell clusters from mature mixed-species biofilms
Article Abstract:
Researchers show that clumps of bacteria can detach from biofilms. Single cells and small clusters detach more frequently but larger clumps were also found. The largest clump measured approximately 500 [micro sign]m in diameter.
