The appearance of male gamete-specific histones gH2B and gH3 during pollen development in Lilium longiflorum
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the role played by histone variants H2B and H3 in male generative nucleus in the mature pollen of Lilium longiflorum during gametogenesis. Genetic analyses revealed the absence of H2b and H3 in the microsporocytes during meiotic division and mitosis. However, both variants were present in elevated levels in mid bicellular pollen and in germinated pollen tubes after pollination. These results suggest that these male-specific histones are synthesized by sperm cells to be used in spermatogensis.
