The barley Mlo gene: a novel control element of plant pathogen resistance
Article Abstract:
The broad spectrum resistance mediated by recessive host gene mutations was analyzed based on the molecular isolation of the mutation-induced recessive alleles (mlo) of barley Mlo protein. Analysis of Mlo amino acid sequence based on transposon-tagging-mediated gene isolation approach indicated the presence of six hydrophobic stretches that form six transmembrane helices. Furthermore, the Mlo protein is a member of a novel protein family that triggers a distinct mechanism for plant pathogen resistance.

Vascular endothelial cell adherens junction assembly and morphogenesis induced by sphingosine-1-phosphate
Article Abstract:
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (SPP) has been shown to activate the EDG-1 and -3 subtypes of G protein-coupled receptors on endothelial cells. SPP is a novel regulator of angiogenesis. Vascular endothelial cells undergo morphogenesis into capillary networks responding to angiogenic factors.
