The bond between sisters
Article Abstract:
Cytological studies in Drosophila show that a sister chromatid cohesion gene, mei-S332, plays an important role in sister chromatid cohesion in meiosis. Molecular mapping of a Drosophila centromere on a minichromosome show that 200 kb of flanking heterochromatin also plays an important role by binding the cohesion protein, MEI-S332. In the absence of MEI-S332, the cohesion between chromosome arms is sufficient to promote sister chromatid cohesion until the onset of anaphase I. Two models explaining cohesion along meiotic chromosome arms are presented.

Chromosome morphogenesis: Condensin-dependent cohesin removal during meiosis
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to show that condensin facilitates the removal of cohesin from chromosomes during the first meiotic division of budding yeast and that this removal is important to dissolve the links between homologs that ensure proper homolog segregation. This provides an example of a functional connection between cohesin and condensin, two different SMC complexes.

Cohesin and the maternal age effect
Article Abstract:
A mouse model that mimics several aspects of the maternal age effect observed in humans is created. A mouse mutation in the meiosis-specific cohesin protein SMC1beta seems to exhibit age-dependent defects in meiosis which are similar to those observed in oocytes of older human mothers.
