The regulation of MyoD gene expression: conserved elements mediate expression in embryonic axial muscle
Article Abstract:
The tissue-specific replication of the myoD gene in vertebrate embryos is controlled by the proximal regulatory region and distal regulatory region (DRR) of the myoD gene. A MyoD-lacZ gene present in transgenic mice is expressed in the myotomes at the same time as the endogenous myoD but its expression in the limb buds and branchial arches is later than that of myoD mRNA. The expression of MyoD-lacZ in Xenopus laevis occurs at the same time as expression of myoD mRNA. In Xenopus the -1.3 kb to -275 kb region can act as the DRR.

Normal expression and the effects of ectopic expression of the Drosophila muscle segment homeobox (msh) gene suggest a role in embryonic muscles
Article Abstract:
The identical expression of Drosophila muscle segment homeobox (msh) gene and homologous vertebrate Hox 7 and Hox 8 genes, and the ectopic expression results of msh in the mesoderm reflect the participation of a msh-like gene family in mesodermal and muscle differentiation and patterning. The msh gene expression occurs at the stage 6 in the dorsal lateral ectoderm of the embryo, in the growing central and peripheral nervous system. At later stages of embryonic development, gene expression is absent or decreased.
