Toward a system of microbial forensics: From sample collection to interpretation of evidence
Article Abstract:
The gaps requiring research investments is identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI's) Scientific Working Group on Microbial Genetics and Forensics. The discussion of the Banbury Microbial Forensics group included how to coordinate and effectively focus resources that several agencies bring to bear and how to address the need to engage the broader research community in the most important issues of this field.

Hydroxylation and biodegradation of 6-methylquinoline by pseudomonads in aqueous and nonaqueous immobilized-cell bioreactors
Article Abstract:
Enrichment cultures of pseudomonads capable of transforming or degrading quinolines were established from creosote-contaminated soil. The selected bacteria were able to degrade quinoline, isoquinoline and 6-methylquinoline in reactions which produced monohydroxylated metabolites. In addition, the quinoline-degrading microorganisms retained their degradative ability in aqueous and nonaqueous immobilized-cell systems.

Rapid dye decolorization method for screening potential wood preservatives
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe a method for testing wood preservatives based on the decolorization of Remazol Brilliant Blue R by redox reactions produced by wood decay fungi as they degrade lignin. Effective preservatives would inhibit the decolorization process.
