Transposable element distribution in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
B Charlesworth et al have claimed that C H Langley et al's proposed model of ectopic exchange is a more acceptable alternative hypothesis since it fulfills better the data obtained in Drosophila melanogaster. It could also explain the evolutionary dynamics of repetitive DNA which could be observed in population genetics. However, their analysis is flawed since they failed to consider the role of selection against the insertional effects of transposable elements. Their recommendation for further studies on ectopic exchange holds true for the model of selection against insertion.

Dosage compensation of the copia retrotransposon in Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
The abilities of the Drosophila X-linked white mutation and the inserted copia element to dosage compensate were determined. The results showed that both copia and white can dosage compensate. However, the dosage compensation exhibited by these elements are independent. The two transcriptional units dosage compensate in response to differences in developmental stage and genomic position.

Transposon insertions causing constitutive Sex-lethal activity in Drosophila melanogaster affect Sxl sex-specific transcript splicing
Article Abstract:
The development of females in Drosophila melanogaster is stimulated by sex-lethal (Sxl) gene products. The Sxl genes suppress the transcriptional hyperactivation of the x-linked genes which cause the administration of the male X-chromosome dosage compensation to the genes. This results in the expression of female-specific functions of the developmental gene in diplo-X individuals.
