Volatile metabolites produced by six fungal species compared with other indicators of fungal growth on cereal grains
Article Abstract:
Volatile metabolites, 3-methylfuran in particular, were found to have potential usefulness in the detection and quantification of fungal growth on cereals. The differences in results from different fungal species were more significant than from the type of grain. The correlation between accumulated carbon dioxide and volatile metabolite production was stronger than the link with actual carbon dioxide production. The production of the volatile metabolites was more highly correlated with ergosterol content of the grains rather than with the number of colony-forming units.

Comparison of methods for estimating the biomass of three food-borne fungi with different growth patterns
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of the ergosterol assay for reducing the mold growthin food and feeds was evaluated. The results of hyphal length measurements and colony forming unit counts were compared with the assay's results. Three food-borne fungal strains grown on synthetic agar substrate were used as test organisms in the experiment. The suitability of the ergosterol level as a quantitative monitoring marker of fungal growth was demonstrated.

Molecular identification of species from the Penicillium roqueforti group associated with spoiled animal feed
Article Abstract:
The first report of Penicillium expansum in silage is presented. Most Penicillum species causing animal feed spoilage were presumed to be P. roqueforti, but of 52 feed isolates, two were P. expansum, and two were P. paneum.
