Alice in Blunderland, or career success and the Alice Principle
Article Abstract:
People must take responsibility for their own career development by setting achievable goals. They need to update their skills to cope with changing demands and be prepared for redundancy or changes in their own career plans. Jobs which were previously thought to be 'safe' are no longer so, therefore, a willingness to embrace change and new responsibilities is important. They also need to be imaginative and innovative, be prepared to work flexible hours and have negotiable contracts. People who can do this will continue to be employable because they have transferable skills and a positive approach.

The meanings of career revisited: implications for theory and practice
Article Abstract:
There is a need to reassess theoretical assumptions on which traditional ideas of career are based. In this way, it will be possible to move into a new stage in the understanding of careers. It is clear that the meaning and purpose of careers are changing, with growing focus on opportunities for career development both within a company and outside it. There is a growing recognition that the career belongs to the individual and is not controlled by any organization. The company is now only one of several social domains in which an individual's career can develop.

The career dynamic
Article Abstract:
An analysis of traditional career theory and the career states model developed by Valmai Bowden. The traditional career model can no longer adequately deal with the changing face of the business world. Bowden's model for career development splits the workforce into four groups - sustainers, builders, subsisters and searchers - and allows for a fuller account to be taken of the organisational and personal variables that impact on the development of a career.
