Aluminum Futures: Right Contract at the Right Time
Article Abstract:
The Commodity Exchange (COMEX) has just established an aluminum futures contract. Action in metals has been sluggish at COMEX lately due to concern over interest rates. The aluminum industry has been revolutionized during the past decade. Foreign competition has taken a big part of the market from United States firms. Alcoa, Kaiser and Reynolds formerly had almost half the market, now they enjoy less than one-third. The basic distinction between the COMEX contract and the aluminum futures contract at the London Metals Exchange (LME) is the purity of the metal traded. LME still primarily offers ninety-nine and a half per cent aluminum, whereas COMEX will trade the higher standard, P1020A.

Why Cocoa, Sugar Bull Markets Continue to Dissolve
Article Abstract:
Commodity analysts advised that sugar and cocoa futures were the place to be in 1983 and 1984. It appeared that with the severe weather that plagued most of the world in 1982 and 1983, that production of these two soft commodities would be down, pushing demand and the market price up. Apparently, the weather did not have as big an effect as anticipated, especially on sugar. Both of these markets are trying to technically correct themselves. It is not known at this point where the price will settle, but predictions are that they will be lower than expected.

Palladium: Most Precious of Precious Metals
Article Abstract:
Palladium is fast becoming the most popular metal in the marketplace. In both the electronics industry and dentistry, palladium is proving to be a much cheaper and more durable product than gold. In the auto industry it is being used in place of platinum for catalytic converters. The Soviet Union's mining of palladium accounts for sixty to seventy-two per cent of total world production. The Soviets are using their position in the marketplace to affect the price and availability of palladium.
