The companies that comprise the US apparel industry are still struggling in the last months of 1999, but should improve in the final qtr of the year with the holiday selling season. Many US companies have moved to less expensive off-shore facilities, and cutting costs and engaging in merger and acquisition activity in order to remain competitive. Investors need to be cautious with these stocks as the industry is volatile and many stock prices are in decline.

The apparel industry had hoped for a better year in 2001 prior to the terrorist attacks of Sep 11, 2001, but consumer spending has decreased since then. The Christmas selling season may not be as good as expected, and sales in the year 2002 are likely to be disappointing. Conservative investors will not find opportunities in this industry.

Lower sales and earnings were posted by the clothing industry during the 1st qtr of 2001, and this is likely to continue through the rest of the year. The need to anticipate market changes is a major industry consideration, however. Investors need to be cautious when evaluating these stocks.
