Are we ready for fourth-generation ABC?
Article Abstract:
Increasing competition since the 1980s has been compelling companies to restructure their cost accounting systems. Businesses are in search of an approach to costing that will provide management the information needed to enable it to apply competitive strategies and innovative technologies. This constant demand for a better cost system has created three generations of such systems. The first-generation of activity-based cost (ABC) systems, used before the 1980s, focused on short-term planning and control, product costing, and decision making. The second-generation systems concentrates on processes instead of products, and generates information for continuous improvement, performance evaluations and product costing. Third-generation systems zero in on the internal and external relations of business units. The next generation of ABC systems are likely to focus on linking the operations of different business units to generate information for the entire organization.

Reducing personal property taxes
Article Abstract:
A well-planned strategy for personal property reporting, documentation, and tax estimating can be a good way for companies to cut costs. Proper management of personal property taxes involves determining the accuracy of asset information, knowing the assessment methods assessors use, and reviewing reports for errors in the reporting process. Companies should understand the importance of controlling personal property taxes since these are assessed without regard for the profitability of the business.
