Are you ready for an overseas assignment?
Article Abstract:
The increasing globalization of business provides American executives with numerous opportunities for overseas assignments. American expatriates are preferred over home country employees because the former are equipped with global skills, possess substantial company knowledge, and are capable of advancing new projects. Prospective overseas workers should carefully examine the advantages and disadvantages of an expatriate assignment by evaluating personal, professional and financial considerations. All costs to be incurred should be covered by the company. Relocation specialists will be very helpful during the transfer process. Prospective expatriates should also familiarize themselves with the country's culture and learn the country's language. Daily life will have a different pattern and there will be cultural variances in work. Preparations for repatriation will also need extensive planning.

Usually, the selection is made from a consideration of the most outstanding employees. Having made a choice, that employee must be briefed on adapting to an alien culture. Also, furnishing the company representative with training and support would smoothen the transition and stay for business and personal purposes. Preparations for the employee's repatriation is also involved in the management of successful cross-national assignment.

Overseas 'Plums' Leave a Sour Taste
Article Abstract:
Managers in United States multinational corporations are not as willing to accept overseas assignments as they were in the past.
