Arzu wins presidential runoff

National Advancement Party candidate Alvaro Arzu Irigoyen defeated Guatemalan Republican Front candidate Alfonso Portillo Cabrera on Jan 7, 1996. Arzu won 51.22% of the vote, and will replace outgoing Pres Ramiro de Leon Carpio. Arzu vowed to end the civil war and improve human rights.

Iliescu, splinter party lead in Romanian voting
Article Abstract:
Pres Iliescu led the Romanian presidential election with 48% of the vote, with about 90% of the votes counted. A candidate with no political experience, Emil Constantinescu, had 30.5% of the vote. A runoff on Oct 11, 1992, was expected.
