Bell Atlantic, GTE hold merger talks
Article Abstract:
Amid a series of telecommunications megamergers, New York-based Bell Atlantic Corp. and Stamford, Conn.-based GTE Corp. have been holding high-level negotiations on a merger. The value of such a merger is estimated to be between $52.5 billion and $55 billion, creating a with $53 billion in revenue, 62 million telephone lines and would allow Bell Atlantic to enter into coveted long-distance markets. While officials from both companies have declined to comment, it is possible that the deal will collapse under scrutiny by federal regulators, whom have stepped-up their close scrutiny of telecommunications mergers, particularly mergers of companies with cellular assets.

Jeep's challenge: stay rugged but add room for golf clubs
Article Abstract:
Increased competition from foreign and Big 3 rivals has pushed the Chrysler Corp. to redesign the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Faced with the dilemma of adding high-tech comfort and convenience features, while maintaining its rugged image, Jeep spent $2.65 billion, 2 or 3 times what Chrysler normally spends on new car developments, in an effort to keep its leadership position in luxury sport-utility-vehicles. New features include improved off road capability and enough cargo space to carry 8 golf club bags.
