Chechen rebels release hostages after raid on Russian town

The last of 2,000 hostages seized by Chechnya rebels were released unharmed on Jun 19, 1995, after Russian authorities agreed to allow the rebels to return to Chechnya. The hostage crisis began on Jun 14, 1995, and resulted in 120 deaths. Russia had launched two unsuccessful attacks on the rebels.

Chechen rebels took hundreds of people hostage in Pervomayskoye, Russia, on Jan 15, 1996, but were overcome by Russian troops on Jan 18, 1996. The tension between Russia and republic of Chechnya began in 1991, when Chechnya declared its independence from the newly-formed Russia.

Accord reached on Black Sea fleet

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to jointly control the former Soviet Black Sea fleet for three years and then to divide the fleet. Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin and Ukrainian Pres Leonid M. Kravchuk reached the agreement on Aug 3, 1992.
