Chicago chain of supermarkets considers sale

Dominick's Supermarkets Inc., the Chicago area's No. 2 grocery chain, said that other supermarket chains are interested in buying it. Dominick's would cost more than $950 million at the current stock price. The company would not name the chains interested in buying it. Dominick's has hired an investment banking firm which will assess options other than a sale, including acquisitions and mergers. It would not name the investment banking firm. Dominick's 27% share of the Chicago market makes it an attractive company in a rapidly consolidating supermarket industry.

Sears plans to cut some apparel prices by 15%, shift focus of its ad campaign

In an effort to improve sales, Sears, Roebuck will change the thrust of its 'softer side' ad campaign to price. It will also pare down vendors soas to offer fewer choices on the racks and it will reduce some prices by 15%. Competition against the likes of Wal-Mart is one reason given for the changes.
