Clinton approves strategic petroleum reserve oil sale; move aims to curb increase in gas prices

Clinton approved the sale of about 12 billion barrels of oil from the government's Strategic Petroleum Reserve on Apr 29, 1996, in an effort to slow the rising prices of gasoline. Clinton also requested Energy Sec Hazel O'Leary to provide him a report to explain the escalating gas prices.

VP Al Gore reported on Jan 22, 1993, that the Council on Competitiveness had been abolished as Gore and Pres Bill Clinton had promised while campaigning. The council, established by George Bush and headed by Dan Quayle, had been criticized for trying to weaken several environmental laws.
