Clinton visits, signs air-travel pact

Pres. Clinton and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien have agreed to adopt an open-skies policy for their air transport industries. With this agreement, air travel between the two countries would be greatly facilitated. In response, Air Canada has announced 20 new air routes between the two countries.

Clinton opposes tougher U.S. sanctions
Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton has come out against a proposal by Sen Jesse Helms that would augment economic sanctions against Cuba. Helms' proposal was vilified by Canada and the European Community, and Clinton said he believes that the existing sanctions against Cuba were sufficient.

President Preval visits U.S.

Preval met with Pres Clinton during a visit to the US from Mar 19-22, 1996. Pres Clinton promised $100 million in aid for Haiti, and Preval also met with private investors. Republicans criticized Preval for not making more progress on curbing political violence.
