Article Abstract:
The Russian parliament voted Jul 9, 1993, that the port of Sevastopol and the Black Sea fleet belong to Russia, not the Ukraine. Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin was angry with the vote because it contradicted a treaty he signed with Ukraine agreeing to split the Black Sea fleet housed in Sevastopol.

Russia, Ukraine in rift over Crimean peninsula
Article Abstract:
The Russian legislature rescinded its approval of a 1954 treaty transferring Crimea to the Ukraine. Ethnic Russians in the region are working for independence from Ukraine. The regional parliament withdrew a declaration of independence, but plans an Aug 1992 referendum on autonomy.

Russia reschedules $2.5 billion debt
Article Abstract:
Russia agreed on Mar 20, 1995, to restructure $2.5 billion of Ukraine's total debt of $4.4 billion in an effort to help stabilize Ukraine's economy. The debt restructuring cleared the way for Ukraine to receive a $1.8 billion standby loan from the International Monetary Fund.
