Corporate responsibility and the environment
Article Abstract:
Global resources are not able to sustain the rate of industrialisation in the developed world. People do not repair or recycle materials, preferring to throw them away and get new ones. This perpetuates the cycle of production and increases pollution and waste. Businesses must work in harmony with nature and, since the Rio Summit, companies are recognizing their obligations to reduce production, use less energy in the production process, reduce toxic pollution, make materials recyclable, give products a longer life and make them stronger. These changes are urgently needed.

Ethics feature continuation: social responsibility: business and the values of our society
Article Abstract:
Businesses which wish to perform well in a market economy must subscribe to certain values, including trustworthiness, honesty and reliability. They have a self-interest in forming and transmitting these values, but in general business leaders are not participating in the current debate in the UK about the values on which modern life should be based. Taking part in the debate would allow business leaders to assess the role they play in forming and transmitting values and thus the role which they must play in modern society.

Ethics feature: social responsibility
Article Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility and profitability are often perceived as being mutually exclusive but competitive behaviour can promote a socially responsible business attitude. Companies with socially-responsible attitudes aim to take into account the wider social and economic costs of their activities and operations, and balance them against the need to be competitive. BP is one company that is committed to making special contributions to the communities within which it operates.
