The European Union conference, held Jan 22-24, 1996, in Brussels, Belgium, was attended by European leaders, bankers and businesspeople. Many expressed doubts about whether the 'euro' single currency system could be implemented by the scheduled 1999 deadline. Unemployment was also discussed.

The UK withdrew the British pound from participation in the European Monetary System on Sep 16, 1992, because the Bank of England could not prevent its devaluation. UK officials blamed the German Bundesbank's refusal to cut interest rates.
