Deal on farm-subsidy reform set
Article Abstract:
The European Community has agreed to reform its Common Agricultural Policy, a program that provides agricultural subsidies. Price supports for grain will be replaced by direct payments to farmers. The pact may ease negotiations at the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

U.S. threatens stiff tariffs on EC goods
Article Abstract:
US leaders have stated that they will seek to impose a 200% tariff on $300 million worth of exports from European Community (EC) members in retaliation for the EC's rejection of a US request for a further reduction in European agricultural subsidies. The tariffs could take effect Dec 5, 1992.

Representatives from the US and the EC were unable to overcome a deadlock over agricultural subsidies during trade negotiations on Oct 11-12, 1992. The US supported a reduction in subsidies for EC farmers.
