Defence is fine but watch for bargains
Article Abstract:
Australian stocks have been subjected to a bear market because of investors' fears of global market changes. Australian stockbrokers are more optimistic than economists about the country's economic outlook, but they see no problem with using a conservative approach to protecting portfolios. It may be advisable to sell off cyclical securities and turn to safer stocks in banking, real estate property trusts, insurance, food, and consumer goods. Domestic companies with high price/earning ratios are safe bets compared with service, automobile or building material industries.

Financial services get a value shake-out, but approach them with caution
Article Abstract:
The Australian stock market suffered a 7.3% loss on Oct 28, 1997. The sharp decline in the market left investors in the once-bullish banking and insurance sectors and in real estate investment trusts with losses for the year. Insurance stocks are predicted to have the toughest time recovering due to insurers' huge investment portfolios as overall market declines will cut the value and earnings of those portfolios.
