Delta Air Lines wrestles with discontent among pilots; despite generous wage offer, approval of tentative pact is in doubt
Article Abstract:
Pilots at Delta Air Lines are set to vote on a contract supplement covering pay rates for a new series of the Boeing 737 jet. Under this tentative supplement agreement, Delta pilots flying the Boeing 737-800 series and the Boeing 737-300G series jests would receive the highest wages in the industry for those aircraft. Many Delta pilots, however, state that they will vote against this agreement as a sign of their disenchantment with the carrier's management despite urging from the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) to vote for its approval. Many Delta pilots are bitter over the concessionary four-year contract adopted in 1996 that they believe they were tricked into taking. That contract, which included a 2% pay cut and productivity enhancements, was enacted at a time when the carrier was righting itself financially.

Delta Air's board rejects union seat, clouding pact with United Airlines
Article Abstract:
The board of Delta Airlines has decided not to grant a voting seat to the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents the carrier's 9,000 pilots. The union considered attaining a voting seat on the board to be a vital condition towards its support of Delta's joint venture with United Airlines. Although Delta and United plan to pursue their joint venture, they cannot complete their alliance without approval from the pilots unions from both carriers. United's pilots, which already have a seat on the carrier's board, have not raised any major objections to the planned alliance. Delta's president, Leo F. Mullin, stated that he plans to encourage the union to approve the joint venture without the voting seat.
