Discharge of gay Navy officer upheld
Article Abstract:
An appeals court ruled 9-4 on Apr 5, 1996, that Thomasson's 1995 dismissal is valid. The Navy had dismissed Thomasson under the 1993 'don't ask, don't tell' policy formulated by Pres Clinton. Thomasson and other gay service personnel have challenged the policy on free speech grounds.

Death-row innocence claims curbed
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court on Jan 25, 1993, ruled that death-row prisoners in state institutions who found evidence of their innocence after their incarceration were usually not entitled to a new trial in federal court. In two other cases, the Court upheld the legality of capital punishment.
