Hindus destroy Indian mosque, sparking sectarian conflict

Hindus on Dec 6, 1992, destroyed a 16th century Moslem mosque in Ayodhya, India, resulting in nationwide conflict between Hindus and Muslims that threatened the political stability of the country. The Hindus believe the site to be the birthplace of the Hindu deity Ram.

Kashmir Mosque, town cutted in clashes
Article Abstract:
Fighting between government troops and Islamic separatists broke out in Charar-e-Sharief, India from May 8-14, 1995. Resulting fires destroyed homes, stores and a 600-yr-old mosque. About 30 Islamic fighters and two government soldiers were killed from fighting.

Rao realigns cabinet

Prime Minister Rao attempted to gain more authority over the conflict between Hindus and Moslems by making changes in his cabinet on Jan 17, 1993. Rao had asked for the resignation of the Council of Ministers, comprised of 59 members, on the previous day.
