Efficient estimation of arc criticalities in stochastic activity networks
Article Abstract:
New estimators for measuring arc and path criticalities in stochastic activity networks are developed. The algorithm is explained by integrating Monte Carlo simulation with exact analysis on node release times. To demonstrate the efficiency of the estimators, they are applied to several standard and randomly generated test networks. Computational evidence shows the new algorithm to be considerably more efficient than standard Monte Carlo estimators when run time and statistical efficiency are incorporated. It is revealed to have lower variance and to be unbiased. Other results of the experiment are discussed. Issues for further research to extend this estimation approach are also identified.

Managing I/S design teams: a control theories perspective
Article Abstract:
The relationship between the control exerted by a project manager and the control exerted by members of a software development team was studied using data from 41 Information System (I/S) design teams. The results reveal that the best-performing teams were those where project managers had a high degree of process control and team members had a high level of outcome control. The findings uphold the view that team-member control and managerial control coexist. The findings also indicate that team performance is directly linked to the total level of control behavior observed in an I/S design team.

Withdrawal of team autonomy during concurrent engineering
Article Abstract:
When two work teams are working on a concurrent engineering product, each team needs to feel it is has autonomous decision making power. When autonomy is taken away from both or one of the teams, production suffers.
