Article Abstract:
The need to optimize a firm's competitiveness has led US managers to look into the potential of information technology applications which can manage human resources (HR) better. It has been established that HR competitive objectives are primarily driven by cost leadership, quality/customer satisfaction and innovation strategies. Information technology applications are matched with HR objectives to imply the competitive benefits to the firm. Cost leadership objectives are best supported by transaction processing/ reporting/tracking systems, quality/satisfaction initiatives by expert system applications and innovation strategies by decision support systems.

Virtual teams: technology and the workplace of the future
Article Abstract:
The formation of virtual teams offers competitive advantage and organizational flexibility. Virtual teams are composed of coworkers geographically and organizationally linked through telecommunications and information technologies attempting to achieve an organizational task. The three types of technologies used by virtual teams are Internet/intranet systems, desktop videoconferencing systems and collaborative software systems. Members of the virtual teams must be able to acquaint themselves on the use of the technologies to be effective in the virtual work environment.

Article Abstract:
The global expansion of business enterprises presents a challenge in terms of coordinating the entire organization given the spatial and temporal boundaries that separate the different parts of the organization. It is in this respect that innovative information technology will greatly enhance the competitiveness of international business enterprises. The deployment of effective information technologies across the organization will eliminate the boundaries separating the various parts of the organization located in different countries and time zones.
