Financial Users Groups Influencing Software Development
Article Abstract:
The strategies used by three financial user groups in their efforts to influence NCR Corp. for their members' benefit are examined. The Software Enhancements and Licensing Committee (Seal) of the North American NCR Financial Users Group (NANCRFUG), a 275-member organization, works with NCR to prioritize software enhancement needs. A portion of the membership fees go into a Seal fund, which is then used to pay NCR for recommended enhancements. The Ohio-Indiana-Michigan Association of CIF Users (O-I-M CIF), a twenty-member organization, is currently trying to determine NCR's commitment to CIF. If CIF is phased out, the organization will form a support group between members. The International Banking NCR Users Group (IBNCRUG), an eighteen-member organization, sends a representative to the Software Advisory Committee to pass on suggestions to NCR and assess the company's level of commitment.

Retail Users Prefer Their Own
Article Abstract:
An interview was conducted with six NCR retail system users that consisted of specialty products, discount general merchandise, lumber and apparel. These retailers indicated satisfaction with NCR financial accounting systems but preferred to write their own software for other retail applications, such as inventory and sales. The reasons they gave for choosing to write their own software are: greater flexibility, availability of options, on-line capability and random access files.
