For At Home, now comes the real excitement
Article Abstract:
Internet service provider At Home Corp.'s purchase of Web portal Excite Inc. to form Excite@Home Corp. should put the new company in the forefront of the World Wide Web's future. Excite will bring 28 million registered users of its free service to At Home's 500,000 paying customers, making the new company an important piece in the plans of investor AT&T Corp. and others. The deal comes in the midst of increased competition by local telephone, satellite and wireless communications companies, and other online services such as America Online Inc. Tom Jermoluk, At Home's chief executive, and Excite's CEO George Bell both plan to stay with the combined company. Mr. Bell will managed the new company and get a seat on the board, while Mr. Jermoluk will deal more with the outside relationships with cable firms that are major investors in At Home, and will also deal with legal and regulatory issues.

All over the Internet, a rash of skins
Article Abstract:
Computer users are searching the World Wide Web to find the ideal skins for their computer desktop. Skins are computer graphics used to decorate software such as Internet browsers or music players. These graphics appear to be the latest way users can personalize their desktops. According to the Skinz.org information site, there are over 5,000 skins currently available. RealNetworks Inc., a maker of video and audio software for the Web, says skin-loading has become one of the most popular downloads from its Web site. Users have downloaded over 40,000 skins toolkits from its Web site since early August. Skins sit on top of a software program's visual display, rather than lurking in the background.
