HSBC puts out the 'Welcome' mat

The United Kingdom's financial services giant HSBC Group's management goal is to generate new business and build brand awareness outside the world's Asian communities. Since the end of May 1999, all of the Group's subsidiaries in Australia have carried the new global HSBC brand and logo. In August 1999, HSBC InvestDirect, an online stock broker, was launched. At HSBC Bank Australia, customers will be serviced at all stages of their financial life cycle.

The big four Australian banks are looking to sever ties made with prominent stockbroker firms fifteen years ago. Initially, the relationships were meant to counter the invasion of new foreign banks to the market by adding value to the bank's names and giving brokers access to capital, technology, and a distribution base. A lack of mutual understanding of how each entity ran their businesses led to the demise of these relationships.
