Russian police, Communists clash in May Day riot
Article Abstract:
Members of Russia's Communist Party rioted after a clash with police during a demonstration to honor the worker's holiday of May Day in 1993. About 570 people suffered injuries and one policeman died as a result of the violence. Political reaction to the violence is described.

Prison riot crushed, inmates killed
Article Abstract:
Islamic fundamentalists staged a revolt at the Serkadji prison in Algiers, Algeria, on Feb 22, 1995, that resulted in the deaths of at least 96 people. Algeria is reportedly on the brink of civil war, and several rebel and cultural leaders have been killed.
