Insurance (life) industry
Article Abstract:
Life insurance industry securities are rebounding slightly after dropping sharply in the 1st quarter of 1997 from the equally broad increases that were posted in 1996. Increased interest rates, which tie life insurance securities with bonds in performance, makes both long- and short-term investment in life insurance stocks risky. However, several companies with good performance and management track records and high Timeliness ratings offer stocks that should prove to be valuable long-term investments.

Article Abstract:
Inflation news and a rise in the stock market brought about increases in life insurance stocks during the 3rd and 4th qtr in 1997, after having undergone a less active period. International mergers between life insurance firms are increasing, and domestic firms are also planning mergers to keep pace with the number of banks and property and casualty insurance companies that are consolidating and threatening to take away market share from the life insurance market.
