Intel demonstrates new microprocessor; PowerPC alliance will upgrade chips
Article Abstract:
Intel has previewed its P6 successor to the Pentium and plans to launch the chip in the second half of 1995. The P6 is billed as being two times as fast as the Pentium and achieves a SPECint92 rating of 200. The P6 features a new design and is packaged with a secondary chip reserved strictly for cache memory functions and two data pipelines for better display of graphics and video. IBM, Apple and Motorola have announced four PowerPC CPU upgrades to be ready by late 1995 in response to the arrival of the P6. IBM's director of RISC microprocessor development says that the PowerPC 604 chip will reach a SPECint92 rating of 160 to 225 by the end of 1995, while the PowerPC 620 processor for large PC servers will be capable of 225 to 330 in SPECint92 ratings.
