The departure of Israeli troops from the West Bank cities of Nablus and Tulkarm raises the number of cities under Palestinian control to four. The change in control came despite clashes between Palestinians and Israelis. Shimon Peres is continuing the work begun by Yitzhak Rabin.

Jewish right-wing extremist Yigal Amir shot and killed Rabin after Rabin had finished a speech on Nov 4, 1995. Rabin's widow, Leah, blamed Likud bloc leader Benjamin Netanyahu for creating the atmosphere of hatred that prompted the assassination.
