Delta Air reports 20% profit rise for period, topping expectations

Delta Air Lines posted earnings for the fiscal 1998 fourth-quarter that were higher than expected. The carrier was helped by reduced costs for jet fuel and by more passengers. Delta posted $362 million in net income for the quarter ending on June 30, 1998. This translated into a 20% increase over the same period in 1997. The carrier's quarterly revenue rose to $3.76 billion from $3.54 billion.

BankAmerica taps Kenneth D. Lewis as its president

Kenneth D. Lewis has been named president of Charlotte, N.C.-based BankAmerica Corp. Lewis is a 29-yr. veteran of the former NationsBank and is thought to be a strong candidate to replace chairman and CEO Hugh L. McColl Jr. The 51-yr.-old will continue to handle his current duties as head of consumer and commercial banking, a 2/3 chunk of the company's business.
