Lucent says profit for latest quarter will more than double projections
Article Abstract:
Lucent Technologies' 2nd qtr 1996 profits will be between $55 and $65 million, or 9 to 10 cents a share, more than twice analysts' estimates of 4 cents per share. In 2nd qtr 1996, the company reported a loss of $103 million, or 16 cents a share. Lucent is seeing the benefits of independence from AT&T, especially in reduced overheads. Lucent also has diverse telecommunications product offerings, including hardware and software for voice, data, and wireless traffic, which makes it less vulnerable to market swings. Lucent has made significant efforts to reduce its high sales and administrative expenses, which dropped to 24% of revenue in 1996 from over 25% in 1995. Lucent has recently signed a number of important contracts to provide equipment for communications software and networking switching products, and hopes to see its wireless communications equipment business grow with new opportunities in Asia.

Cabletron CEO is expected to resign
Article Abstract:
The departure of Cabletron CEO S. Robert Levine is expected to result in major changes at the computer networking equipment company. Analysts anticipate the company will begin to focus on ways to regain market share, which it has been losing in recent years. Cabletron's earnings for its first qtr ended May 1, 1997 were far below expectations and revenue was up only 12%. Analysts had expected Cabletron's net income to be 50 cents a share, but it only surpassed the first qtr of 1996 by a penny with 38 cents a share. Cabletron has chosen an individual from outside the company to take over Levine's roles of president and CEO. The company's chmn and COO, Craig R. Benson has the full backing of the board and is expected to retain his current position.
