MAPS can be a roadblock to e-mail access
Article Abstract:
Questions regarding Internet privacy, protecting computer users from 'spam' and the rights of market survey services to communicate with consumers are headed to a courtroom as Harris Interactive Inc. has filed a lawsuit against the non-profit Mail Abuse Prevention Systems L.L.C. organization. MAPS, a Redwood City, California company, puts together lists of 'spam' sources that they then forward to Internet service providers. These blacklists, or "black holes," are used by the ISPs to block email to and from the 'spammers.' While MAPS claims it is under no obligation to distinguish between 'spammers' and pollsters like Harris, Harris contends MAPS has no legal right to prevent it from conductinf legitimate business over the Web.

The tricky task of tracking Web users
Article Abstract:
Media Metrix Inc., an Internet measurement firm, has been the object of criticism by some Web companies and advertisers that use its information to determine what sites are being visited by Internet users. A number of Web publishers and online retailers find their own data seem to be at odds with the projections of the measurement firm. Media Metrix recruits 'panels' made up of thousands of users who install special software that tracks their every online movement. Some Web companies utilize 'log files' that record the movements of visitors to their sites and, these firms claim, are exact representations of their audiences, not projections.
